What is good leadership?

April 11, 2023
It’s easy to find examples of bad leadership. Bad leadership lends itself to people telling you about it, complaining. It inspires people to make podcasts and doco series about it (see WeCrashed and The Dropout).

But what about good leadership?
The story of good leadership is not heard as often.

I’ve pulled together what I think are the foundational principles of quality modern leadership to share with you in this post.

Remember, you don’t need to always look to others to lead you. Having a great leader to work with is fantastic, but even more important, is you need to learn to lead yourself!

So look at these qualities to develop within yourself, as well as to look for in others around you.

A good leader displays:

A good leader needs has a clear vision and is able to communicate it effectively to their team.

Emotional intelligence
Good leaders understand and manage their own emotions, as well as those of their team members.

In today’s rapidly changing business environment, good leaders need to be flexible and adaptable to new situations and challenges.

Good leaders take responsibility for their actions and decisions, as well as the actions and decisions of their team.

Good leaders empower their team members to take ownership of their work and they provide them with the tools and resources they need to succeed.

Good leaders foster a collaborative environment where team members can work together effectively and share ideas and feedback.

Continuous learning
Good leaders are committed to their own personal and professional growth, as well as that of their team members, and encourage ongoing learning and development.

Ethics and values
Good leaders are guided by a strong ethical compass and core values, and model these principles for their team members.

I think these principles are inspiring. The good news is that they can be developed by anyone.
