Doing nothing: A valid option?

Working with my clients over the years, we have implemented many strategies for resolving problems. We have reframed situations to see a new perspective, worked on our thoughts and assumptions, behaviours and habits.

Occasionally, there is a situation that arises where these proven methods are not yielding much in the way of resolution. This can be a frustrating time for my client. They try a number of things but nothing seems to create the changes they want to see.

Then suddenly, a few coaching sessions later, the issue is no longer an issue. 

At this point, I always ask my clients: What happened? Did you do anything different to change this situation?

And what do they say? They say “no”.
They didn’t do anything differently.

This is how I realised the power of doing nothing. Yes, nothing. It will seem illogical to you if you are a problem-solver. (I know it’s hard for me to apply too!). But doing nothing can actually be a valid option for problem resolution.

Some things take time to work, so allowing more time (doing nothing) is exactly what you need to do. This means being patient and seeing what happens.

Some people take time to adjust to changes/roles/new work procedures. Doing nothing means choosing not to correct them, make suggestions or do it yourself instead.

If you get stuck and have already tried a few things, then doing nothing may be just the thing for you to try next.
